Henderson Green enrolled to Engineer new Studio School
Henderson Green is playing a key role in the development of a new school on the Isle of Wight designed specifically for 14-19 year olds with the purpose of bridging the gap between education and employment.
The leading engineering consultancy’s expertise is being put into practice as it provides full mechanical and electrical design services for The Studio School in East Cowes.
The school, which is state-run and part of a national network of Studio Schools, will open its doors to around 300 pupils for the first time in September this year.
The huge refurbishment project sees a former disused Edwardian school transformed into a state-of-the-art learning environment with the aim of preparing young people for the workplace. The Studio School will specialise in marine manufacturing and offshore energy.
Henderson Green is working with Kier to design an environment which facilitates the variety of activities and subjects taking place in the building. These include engineering, 3D printing, CAD, sciences and heavy IT, in addition to new kitchen facilities.
The mechanical design includes a new heating system serviced by two new wall mounted high efficiency gas fired heating boilers. It also includes heat recovery ventilation to the science laboratory and staff room area, mechanical ventilation to the new kitchen area, new domestic water services and gas service installations.
The electrical design features a new lighting system utilising highly efficient T5 lamps controlled automatically via detectors configured for absence and linked to the amount of daylight present. The design also includes an upgraded electrical supply, a new electrical distribution system, fire alarm system, data system and security system.
Russ Pitman, Henderson Green’s Managing Director said, “The Studio School is an exciting yet challenging project due to the quick turnaround required for the September opening deadline.
“We’re working closely with the contractor and the school itself in order to ensure the mechanical and electrical designs meet the demands of this high-tech facility. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to use our extensive experience in the education sector and we’re delighted to be part of this innovative project,” added Russ.
The Southampton and Channel Island based practice works for an array of clients in the healthcare, education and commercial sectors including University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, Universities of Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and Bournemouth, Solent University, States of Jersey Health & Social Services, EDF Energy, ABP Associated British Ports and many other private enterprises.
